After a deep dive with shareholders, several options were put forth for the re-brand. A couple iterations later, this is where we landed. It spoke well to our core target, inner city youth, while solving the problem our shareholders had struggled with since day one. They were pleased to say the least and I was immensely happy about it.

Our next focus would be the apps UX/UI. When new functions or features were to be designed we began with defining the feature, the user flow, the content within each screen and then sketching out the UI. With sketches we could quickly test and reiterate. When sketches were in a good place we could then move onto digital wires for further testing and reiteration.

Digital wires allowed for testing our concepts with actual users on screen. We found through testing, that content sections would benefit from improved visual grouping and hierarchy.

With the brand identity solved previously, the next step was figuring out how to scale it across the user interface. We went through a number of explorations, tested with users, reiterated and tested further. We learned a lot throughout the process about dark themed UI, which hadn’t really been explored in depth up to that point. Accessibility was regularly tested as we formed new elements for the UI.

A marketing site redesign was on the to-do list as well. Beginning with writing content, then sourcing inspiration, we designed out a number of options utilizing best practices. Some iterations later, this is where we landed.

Business cards extended the brand further and made for a nice touch point with organizations. The cards were letterpressed and foil stamped with holographic foil on either black or white stock.

Swag included all kind of cool stuff such as these shirts.

The kit featured all of our swag, including a 5-panel hat, choice of a shirt, stickers, business cards, an enamel pin and reading material.

Another chance to do extend the brand, while doing something cool and different.

Making volunteering an enjoyable experience means people are more likely to do it again. At Unself we assisted organizations with putting on events and put on a few of our own.

When joining Unself, the brand and UI were the main concerns. Through research, ideating, testing and reiterating, we built a strong brand and user interface system, which earned praise from many of our users.
